Supporting Stick (Mutekka)
According to the dervishes of the period, “suffering” by eating and sleeping very little was one of the conditions to belong to the Mawlevi sect. During the process in which they devoted themselves to their thoughts, in order to prevent themselves from lying down and
sleeping, they used these sticks called “mutekka”. Sticking the sharp end in the ground, they leaned over and placed their chins on the crescent shaped end of the “mutekka” or supporting stick.
