Masnavi Page Decoration
Masnavi is Mawlana’s 6 volume masterpiece. The book, written in Persian, is made of 25648 couplets. In his work, Mawlana has
told his ideas and emotions about the Tasavvuf belief, as a series of stories. One day, Celebi Husamettin suggests Mawlana
should write down his ideas and make a book of his beautiful words. Smiling, Mevlana takes out a piece of paper under his “sarık”:
it is the first 18 couplets of the Masnavi. As of that day, Mawlana, while wandering around, sitting, walking, and even while
turning sema, wrote countless couplets, which were written down by Celebi Husamettin; the couplets which still astonish us by their beauty today. The oldest known copy of the Masnavi, dated 1278,
is exhibited at the Mawlana Museum in Konya, Turkey.
