Wool Carpet Design
[Konya, Early 14th Century – Seljuk]
In the introduction of the art of knotted carpet weaving to Anatolia by Turkish tribes, the Seljuks undoubtedly played the greatest role. Earliest examples (13th century) were found in the tombs of Seljuk Sultans and used limited number of colors with designs consisting of intricate geometric patterns with decorative kufic like borders. The pictured carpet is filled with rows of stylized birds, four in each row, with blue, purplish brown, and beige colors on a red background. An “S” motif in different colors in a rectangle box appears on the back of each figure.
