Tiles from the Rustem Pasha Mosque
[Istanbul, 1561 – Ottoman]
The tiles in the Rustem Pasa Mosque are generally acknowledged to be an outstanding example of the unique richness and superb artistic achievement, characteristic of Iznik tiles during the era of Suleyman the Magnificent. The mosque built in memory of Sultan Suleyman’s Grand Vezir Rustem Pasha (Suleyman's daughter Princess Mihrimah’s husband), was completed in 1561. The panel which is located left to the entrance is regarded as one of the greatest achievements of the Ottoman artists and Iznik tile masters. Within this tile there are many stylized examples of flowers and leaves. However, the Rustem Pasha Mosque is also famous for its many different types of tulip forms. In these repeating tiles, ascending vines and tulips moving into opposite directions can be found.
