Calligraphic Scroll made for Sultan Mehmed II
[Istanbul, January 20 1458 – Ottoman]
The picture appearing on the left is part of a calligraphic scroll made for Sultan Mehmed II, The Conqueror. It is a kufic calligraphic panel composed of Arabic and Persian letters, with three names written in gold: Muhammed, Ahmad and Hudavand, and ‘Sultan’ written in black. The other letters of this panel have not been deciphered. It is one of the earliest examples of painting combined with writing in kufic script.
